Beverly Osu bemoans Nollywood’s poor pay, feels she should be wealthier given her portfolio.
Beverly Osu has criticised the financial realities of Nollywood, arguing that despite her extensive portfolio and years of dedication, she should be a billionaire by now.
Speaking in a recent episode of ChaCha’s Couch podcast, the movie star opened up about the industry’s problematic pay structure, claiming it punishes experienced talent and ultimately degrades the quality of films.
Osu explained that actors who advocate for higher fees are often quietly pushed aside by producers who opt for less experienced — and cheaper — alternatives, regardless of who is best suited for the role.
“The community is happy shooting movies. When it comes to pay, if you charge too much for them there is a level of pivot you get to where everybody thinks that your fee is too high,” she said.
“They start looking for younger ones, even if they know you going to kill the role. Instead of encouraging actors in general, these people go to someone that think that they can afford.”
She argued that the short-term financial strategy backfires, compromising the final product.
“On the long run, you end up making shiity movies. You end up cutting corners and your movie comes out and you are not happy with it,” she said.
“I have worked so hard, my portfolio is enough to make me a billionaire. I know I give the humble vibe very well but my portfolio is actually enough to make me a billionaire in this country and in Africa.
“So, that why I am fighting for better wages. From being a luxury model to video vixen to reality TV star and now actor.
