The Principal of Igbobi College, Yaba, Ven. Joseph Oyewale Adediji, has told students that academic performance alone does not define success, urging them to pair brilliance with strong moral character. Speaking at the school’s Academic and Behavioral Awards ceremony on May 20, 2026, he said true achievement requires both intellectual ability and behavioral values like integrity, empathy, respect, and perseverance.
Adediji explained that while academic success reflects late nights, hard work, and curiosity, it only tells half the story. “The true magic happens when that intelligence is paired with strong behavioral values,” he said, quoting the adage, “Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are,” to stress that excellence also lies in a student’s impact on others. He praised the awardees for showing kindness under pressure, staying focused amid distractions, and supporting their peers both in and outside the classroom.
The principal also acknowledged the role of parents, guardians, and teachers in shaping the students’ achievements. “These young people did not reach this milestone alone. Your patience, encouragement, and daily support have provided the foundation upon which they stand,” he said. He urged the students to let their character serve as a compass as they continue their academic journey, encouraging them to remain curious, focused, and godly while treating others with respect.
In a lighter moment, Adediji congratulated Arsenal Football Club and its fans on winning the Premier League after a 22-year wait. The ceremony, attended by staff, students, parents, and friends of the college, was organized to promote both moral and academic excellence.
Among the recipients was Oluwatimilehin Ajibola, who emerged as the Overall Best Behaved Student. Founded on February 2, 1932, Igbobi College remains one of Lagos’ oldest boys-only schools.
